Alumni and students perform service projects in Minneapolis
SMU Service Project
More than 50 Saint Mary’s alumni and students shared their time and talents with needy residents of Minneapolis in a Community Outreach Day, Oct. 30.

The group met at the SMU Twin Cities Campus on Park Avenue, and then divided to lend a hand to six service agencies. Agencies included: Project for Pride in Living; People Serving People; Ascension House; Families Moving Forward; Habitat for Humanity; and Bridging, Inc. of Bloomington.

Saint Mary’s has organized “urban plunge” trips for students since 1995. This first Community Outreach Day was a chance for past and present students of Saint Mary’s to meet and work together for the common good.

Minneapolis was chosen as the focus of this year’s first service projects because the SMU Twin Cities Campus is located in the economically depressed Phillips Neighborhood. The outreach day dovetails with efforts by Twin Cities Campus staff and students to be a positive influence for the rejuvenation of the neighborhood.

Community Outreach Day was sponsored by the SMU Twin Cities Alumni Chapter. Coordinators were Ben Murray ’96 and Angela Dreis ’82, along with the SMU offices of alumni relations and university ministry.

Morrison '91 does her part to save the salmon

Salmon
Towing a 25-foot replica of a pink salmon behind her van, fish biologist Bettina Morrison ’91 is trying to spread the word about protecting salmon in the Pacific Northwest.

“I’ve worked with salmon on the Columbia River and Puget Sound,” said Morrison. She is now a part of the Columbia and Snake Rivers’ Campaign to gather support for partial removal of four dams on the Snake River in Washington to allow salmon to reach their spawning grounds. “We’ve seen a 90 percent decrease in salmon spawning. This is something that needs to be done.”

According to campaign literature, restoring the river’s salmon will mean an extra $300 million a year in recreation revenues. Since 1981, the government has spent $3 billion to turn adult salmon around the dams and put them in spawning grounds.

New plaza to keep alive memories of students

Memorial Arch
Last fall, Saint Mary’s dedicated a plaza on the Winona Campus to memorialize those who died over the years while enrolled as students. The plaza is intended as a place of reflection for Saint Mary’s students, staff, faculty and alumni.

Two black marble wedges form the centerpiece of the Memorial Plaza, with marble benches to one side. Arching over the wedges is a commissioned sculpture by Margaret Mear, BVM of the SMU art department, dedicated to the five students and alumni who died March 1, 1997 in a car accident. Sherman Smith of W. Smith Architectural Service of Winona designed the plaza. An inscription on the marble wedges says, “And I will raise them up …”; names of the students are also integrated into the plaza design.

A formal dedication ceremony was held the morning of August 25, as part of the opening of the university’s academic year. Relatives of the deceased joined the Saint Mary’s community for the dedication, reading of names, and blessing by Reverend William Becker ’83.
